In need of real characters

The renowned expert, Zsolt Perger, has started his duties as a goalkeeper coach at the National Academy of Handball. The former 86-time international, during his successful career as a player and coach has been a member of several well-known clubs at home and abroad, will be responsible in Balatonboglár for the training of boy and girl goalkeepers.

NEKA's new goalkeeper coach, Zsolt Perger, already held the first training sessions at the academy and then talked about the goals and tasks.

“I started working with NEKA’s U15 and youth boy goalies as well as with the youngest girls. I need to get to know the kids first and consult with the head coaches. I think that young people should first learn the basics, the positioning, the basic standing, and the different movements, after that the other motor skills can be developed more easily. I like it when the trainings are held in a good atmosphere, when I have a direct relationship with the players, because I think that respect can be given in an informal way, too, and later we can understand each other by the blink of an eye.”

Based on his experience so far, who will be a good goalkeeper, with whom is it easier to work, he said:

“Girls are easier to train, more disciplined, but they need more help in matches, boys tend to be more independent. At a young age, we need to find the characters who are winning types, who are leaders and, when appropriate, can decide matches. Special skills are not necessarily needed if someone is a hard-working type, if the person wants and does it, then he or she can be successful. A good example is the former NEKA student, Kristóf Győri, who is currently playing for Ferencváros. He is not particularly tall, yet has some little mischief in him; he goes, gets involved, fights and has gained a place on the NB I team. We try to get the most out of everyone, we hope that Kristóf will have a worthy successor, who can also be his younger brother, Nándor, who has just entered the academy.”

Zsolt Perger's name is well known in the world of handball, as the 50-year-old former national team goalkeeper has strengthened the teams of Elektromos, Pick Szeged, Fotex Veszprém, Százhalombatta KE, Gyöngyösi FKK, Ferencváros and PLER as well, besides also having played in Spain and Sweden. He has worked as a coach in Dunaújváros, Csurgó and with PLER, among others, and starting this season he is now a member of the professional staff of NEKA.
